Somatic Experiencing

Healing trauma through the wisdom of the body

Most people think of therapy as a "top-down" approach: we use our minds to talk through our problems. But trauma doesn't just live in our thoughts; it lives in our bodies. Somatic Experiencing is a "bottom-up" approach that focuses on releasing the physical tension and "stored energy" that stays trapped in our nervous system after a distressing event.

When we face a threat, our body prepares to fight, flee, or freeze. If we aren't able to fully complete that survival response, that energy stays "locked" in the body. This can lead to feelings of chronic anxiety, exhaustion, or emotional numbness.

How It Works

Somatic Experiencing isn't about reliving the trauma. Instead, it's about gently and safely "renegotiating" it. We work together to:

Build Body Awareness

We learn to notice "somatic markers" — the small shifts in your breath, heart rate, or muscle tension — that tell us how your nervous system is feeling.

Titration (Going Slow)

We address small pieces of the experience at a time. This prevents you from feeling overwhelmed and ensures your nervous system stays within its "Window of Tolerance."

Pendulation

We practice moving your attention between areas of tension and areas of "resource" (places where you feel calm or strong) to help your body learn how to self-regulate.

Release

By paying attention to physical sensations, your body can finally complete the "thaw" from a freeze state or discharge the "fight or flight" energy, leading to a deep sense of relief.

Somatic Experiencing at Lifted Willow

I use Somatic Experiencing to help you feel "at home" in your body again. When we are processing trauma, SE allows us to follow your body's lead. By combining this with Art Therapy or EMDR, we ensure that your healing isn't just something you understand — it's something you truly feel.
