FAQ for Parents of Minors

Helping you prepare your child for the therapy experience

For the Kids (Ages 4–10)

What do we actually do in therapy?

Think of my office as a place where we "play with a purpose." We have a sandbox, art supplies, puppets, and games. Since play is the way kids talk, we use these things to help you share your feelings, solve problems, and feel more like "you."

Am I in trouble?

Not at all! Coming to see me isn't like going to the principal's office. It's more like having a "coach" for your big feelings. Everyone has times when their feelings feel too big to handle alone, and my job is to help you find your superpower to handle them.

For the Teens

Is what I say private?

This is usually the biggest question! What we talk about stays between us, with three very important exceptions: if I believe you are going to hurt yourself, hurt someone else, or if someone is hurting you. My goal is to create a space where you can be 100% honest without worrying about "getting in trouble" at home.

Do I have to do "art" or "play"?

Only if you want to. Some teens find it easier to talk while they are doodling or working with clay because it takes the pressure off. Others just want to sit and talk. We do whatever helps you feel most comfortable.

For the Parents

How does the intake process work for children?

For children 12 and under, we start with a parent-only session. This gives us time to gather background information, discuss your concerns, and build a plan — all without little ears listening. The second session is the child's intake, where I begin building rapport. Parents are welcome to join for the first 10 minutes or stay the entire time, whichever feels best for your child.

Will I know what's happening in sessions?

I work closely with parents throughout the process. While I maintain age-appropriate confidentiality with your child, I provide regular check-ins about themes, progress, and tools you can use at home. Healing for a child is most effective when the family is involved.
