Art Therapy

When words aren't enough, creativity speaks

Sometimes, the things we carry are too complex, too heavy, or too deeply buried to be put into words. This is especially true for trauma, which often lives in the parts of our brain that does not use language.

Art Therapy is a specialized mental health profession that uses the creative process to help you explore your emotions, reduce anxiety, and process difficult experiences in a safe, non-verbal way.

How It Works

In an art therapy session, the focus isn't on the final product — it's on the process. You don't need to be "good at art" to benefit from this work. Using materials like paint, clay, or collage allows you to:

Externalize the Internal

When you put a feeling onto paper, it moves from being "inside" you to being "outside" you. This makes it much easier to look at, understand, and manage.

Access the Subconscious

Creating art can bypass the "logical" brain, helping you discover insights and memories that traditional talk therapy might miss.

Regulate the Nervous System

The tactile experience of art-making — the feel of clay or the rhythm of a brush — can be incredibly grounding and soothing for a stressed nervous system.

Art Therapy at Lifted Willow

I use creative expression as a bridge. For children, art is their natural language for processing big feelings. For adults navigating trauma, art therapy offers a gentle way to give shape to thoughts, emotions and body sensations when words fail.

I often integrate art with EMDR and Somatic Experiencing, allowing us to "map out" where you feel tension in your body or to visualize the strength you are building during your healing journey.
